Hydrotherapy - Water Dancing

September 10th, 2010

MJD Hydrotherapy Program kicks off on Groote
In September, Australia's leading Hydrotherapy experts came to Groote Eylandt to provide training to individuals from the MJD Foundation, NT Dept of Health and Families, GEMCO and the East Arnhem Shire Council. Thanks to the support of GEMCO, the MJD Foundation was able to run this extremely successful training and commence the hydrotherapy program for individuals on Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island with Machado Joseph Disease. Since the training, the MJD Foundation has conducted weekly hydrotherapy sessions, and we have rebranded this component of our therapy program as "Water Dancing".

Director, Research and Community Services, Libby Massey said "We are very proud of all organisations who have participated and it shows the importance of a program like this to make a real difference, and the necessity of this level of collaboration to deliver services of this nature in a remote community. Notably, all organisations are signatories of our 2009 Memorandum of Understanding for MJD clients on Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island and will continue to work to support our clients in practical ways".

MJD Foundation's Simone McGrath will continue to lead the design and implementation of MJD Therapy services to improve the lives of Machado Joseph Disease clients on Groote Eylandt.
