MJD Foundation

The MJD Foundation received a referral for two clients with MJD through in early 2010.  This came as a surprise to us because these Indigenous Australian MJD sufferers live in Queensland.

After making contact with relevant health service and other government provider personnel, Director, Research & Community Services Libby Massey stopped-over in Cairns and visited Kuranda in March 2010 to scope the extent of the issue and meet with relevant persons.

The aim of the visit was to:
• Assess the probable spread of the disease by ascertaining family information where possible
• Determine available services and supports and make links with personnel and agencies.
• Assess the immediate needs of the referred clients and meet those needs where possible.
• Report back to the MJD Foundation Board to determine the extent to which we can service clients in the state of QLD.

It was a very productive trip, and we want to thank the following organisations and individuals for their time and assistance, and for making us feel so welcome.

- Bev Holland, Genetic Health Queensland
- Peta Donnelly and Dr Dave Cumming, Kuranda Medical Centre
- Caroline Tapscott/Jenny Cory, Smithfield Community Health
- Beatrice, Ngoonbi Cooperative Society
- Marj Wendall, Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre
- Jenny Jensen, Tablelands Council
- Sarah Minniss, QLD Housing Authority
- Michelle and her family at Kuranda
