$2.7 million in Grants Announced for MJD sufferers

Minister Jenny Macklin, Tony Wurramarrba, Gayangwa Lalara

Thursday the 30th October saw the official ‘Southern Launch’ of the Machado Joseph Disease Foundation in Sydney.

Two events were conducted at the law offices of Gilbert + Tobin in the CBD.  At the morning function the Hon Jenny Macklin, Minister for Indigenous Affairs announced a $1.7 million dollar Aboriginal Benefits Trust grant to the Foundation, and the Chairperson of the Anindilyakwa Land Council, Tony Wurramarrba also announced a $1 million dollar grant.   Both Minister Macklin and Tony reiterated their support for those with MJD, the impact of the need on the communities affected, and the ongoing work of the foundation.

At the evening charity function an impassioned speech by Vice Chair Gayangwa Lalara, and an audiovisual presentation highlighting the scope of the needs for those with MJD ensured that the Groote Eylandt holiday and silent art auction were a resounding success.  A few Sydney homes are now adorned with some beautiful and unique art...

The foundation is indebted to Gilbert and Tobin, for their incredible support in sponsoring the launch and cocktail function and to all those who attended, assisted and generously supported the events.
