MJD Foundation Launch

Attendees listen to Senator Trish Crossin formally launch the MJD Foundation.

As part of the Regional Partnership Agreement that was signed on 20th May, Machado Joseph Disease was highlighted as a key focus area for the Groote Eylandt and Bickerton communities.  An initial grant of $100,000 from the Federal Government, matched by the Anindilyakwa Land Council has enabled the MJD Foundation to be established.

The launch of the MJD Foundation was held in Angurugu, Groote Eylandt on Saturday 30th August.  Key speakers included Senator Trish Crossin, international MJD expert Professor Jorge Sequeiros, ALC Chairperson Tony Wurramarrba and MJD Foundation Vice-Chair Gayangwa Lalara.  The sentiment of the day was clear.  There is an enormous amount of ownership and support for the Foundation within the community.  Where there was once blame and shame, the community is learning that they are not alone and they are not at fault.  This disease is international, affecting people from all around the world.  The Groote communities are proud of their decision to support the Foundation and determined  to involve the expertise of medical researchers and practitioners across the globe.
